About Michael Ruehl and Paulina van Bakel

Studying for a week in Berlin, at the Estudio Sudamerica, opened my eyes to how clear, organized, and fun a tango class can be.

My most inspiring classes were given by Michael Ruehl. Studying with Michael has changed the way I teach as an Alexander teacher – for the better!

To begin with, Michael is clearly more interested in his students, and in their learning, and in their remembering what they learn, than he is in presenting himself and what he knows. He is a quiet, unassuming man, but at times very funny.

What’s unusual about Michael, as a teacher, is his ability to find the class’s timing, and go at its’ timing, rather than his timing. He keeps his eyes constantly open as to what his students are getting, and what they are not getting. He understands both the movements of the woman and the man equally having danced for ten years with an Alexander teacher who was great at leading, as well as following.

Quite simply, Michael gives everyone more dancing time so his students learn deeply and well what they are learning. As people are practicing, he kindly goes around to every person, and helps them with the one thing they need, just then, to make everything work better.

At the end of every class with Michael, I knew he saw me, and that he cared about my dancing. I left class confident that, with teachers like Michael, it was only a matter of time and practice before I would, one day, become a good tango dancer.

Michael Ruehl was born in Berlin in 1959. He began studying tango, intensively, twenty years ago, in 1984. He has been teaching continually since 1987, in Berlin and Denmark.
