The Craft of the Hand

Like speaking, using our hands, is particularly human. Literally, to be human means: being made of the earth and having hands. At the Alexander Alliance, we joyfully pass on the skillful tradition of "teaching by hand" entrusted to us by Marjorie Barstow.

Our students become both verbally and tactually literate. Our students learn the subtle art of braiding the verbal with the tactual, the tactual with the verbal, allowing for a depth and quality of human contact that is nothing less than extraordinary.

Fields of Perception

Through practice, we begin to see the generous array of choices presenting themselves to us, now that we are becoming present to them.

Our frequently impulsive reactions become, more often, spontaneous and deliberate responses.

Like a cat jumping into a lap to rest, we find ourselves pleasantly surprised by the unannounced presence of time, clarity, and gratitude.

Teaching
The Language of Listening Our ability to listen must be acute. We learn how to hear and to respect what is being said, as well as what, as yet, cannot be spoken. We honor silence. We let people speak, when they are ready. As we become more articulate and fluid somatically, so we become more articulate and fluent verbally.
