Working

Profound Physicality

Work is good. But what happens when we must work under pressure, for long hours, through trying conditions, and with people who are difficult for us? Keeping sight of our goals, why do we seem to lose sight of ourselves? Doing our best, why are we so often left the worse for it?

How can we arrive at a respectful rapport between ourselves and our work, between ourselves and our problems, between ourselves and others? How can we gain needed distance without becoming distant? How can we come in close without becoming closed in?
Answering these questions, not in words, but through direct experience, lies at the heart of the Alexander Work.

. . . within, but not enclosed, without, but not excluded,
above, but not raised up, below, but not pressed down . . .

-Hildegard von Bingen / Abbess, Poet and Composer
